cannabis packaging

What should I look for in cannabis packaging?

As soon as cannabis is exposed to open air, it’ll immediately begin to lose its effectiveness and flavour. This is because elements in our environment denature cannabinoids over time.

In 2014, researchers at the University of London demonstrated that if high-quality cannabis packaging is used, it is possible to store cannabis for up to two years without losing any potency.

Good packaging will protect your cannabis from light, humidity and oxygen whilst keeping your stash dank for as long as possible.

Read on to find out how these elements slowly destroy your cannabis and what packaging you should use.

Cannabis plants may need lots of light to grow. However, once the flowers are separated from the plant, the light becomes your stash’s worst enemy! This is for two reasons:

  • One of the most important cannabinoids is Tetrahydrocannabinol (or THC for short). This is the compound responsible for getting users high. When exposed to light, THC begins to break down into CBN. CBN has no psychoactive effects on the human body.
  • Light is also damaging to other compounds in your cannabis. Similar to how light will dull paint over time, it’ll also degrade the cannabinoids in your bud.

As a result, it is important to ensure that your cannabis packaging is opaque and that you’re storing it away from direct sunlight.

It’s very important that cannabis packaging is able to maintain stable a stable internal atmosphere. If the environment inside is too warm and dry, your cannabis will begin to decarboxylate. Conversely, if cannabis is kept in packaging that is too cool and damp, it’ll encourage mould to grow.

Mould can be devastating to a crop.  At best, it’ll make your bud smell funky and at worse, it can be dangerous to consume.

Ideally, you want to store your cannabis below 25°C. Anywhere between 25°C-30°C, is the temperature where Mildew thrives.

Pro Tip: It is possible to store your cannabis indefinitely in the freezer.

It is important that any cannabis packaging has the right level of oxygen inside. If your cannabis is exposed to too much, it’ll degrade quickly. However, too little oxygen is also damaging; it’ll increase the chances of mould growing.

What is the best packaging for dry herb vaporizers?

Despite being popular, plastic ‘baggies’ are possibly one of the fastest ways to destroy your cannabis.

The plastic used in baggies is transparent and permeable. This will expose your stash to light, air and offers no protection from temperature and humidity.

Instead, I suggest using the following packaging solutions at home:

Mason jars: Mason jars are ideal to store cannabis. in especially if they have a rubber seal. If you then store the jar somewhere dark, your cannabis is protected from air, light and humidity.

Air-tight vac backs – These bags are capable of removing all air which all but guarantees your cannabis is protected from mould. When weed has been dried out well and properly vacuumed, it can last for years whilst maintaining its integrity.
